A means of transport comprises a wheeled railway carriage or road vehicle (not shown) including a guide duct 34, Fig. 3 (not shown), containing ice blocks 20, 22, the lower ice block 20 supporting the vehicle by engaging a heated steel track 3 or a road surface (not shown) and both blocks 20, 22 being advanced automatically downwards through the guide duct 34 to compensate for melting of the ice blocks. The vehicle may also run on its wheels 80 when the ice blocks 20 are retracted. The carriage is laterally located by a vertical flange, Fig. 4 (not shown), on the rail 3 and by a safe arm 76, Fig. 4 (not shown), which bears on a safety fence (not shown). The vehicle may be driven by jet, propeller, rocket or electrical means or may be coupled to a wheeled driving unit. Two sets. of support devices are provided on the carriage so that one set may be replenished with ice blocks, as described later, while the other set supports the carriage. Reserve ice blocks 22A and 22B, 22C, Fig. 3 (not shown), are lowered by an external crane into the carriage through openings 73, 74, Fig. 4 (not shown), before starting, and are stored on a rollered platform 54 which is normally fixed. A freezing machine 70, Fig. 1 (not shown), provides a low temperature in the thermally insulated carriage and cold air therefrom is blown through a duct 71 on to the ice block 20. The carriage may also carry means for the regeneration of ice blocks. The ice block advancing mechanism comprises a beam 32 bearing on a slab 30 which engages the ice block 22, and spirally-threaded columns 36 which extend through complementary bores 35 in the beam 32 and which are rotated by means of gear-wheels 43 driven via worm gears 45 and gears 48, 49 or 52, 53 by an electric motor 51 controlled by a photo-electric height sensor. Replenishment of the ice blocks is carried out as follows:-The block 22A is hooked by a bar 24, 25 engaging 23 or 23A and the bar is then hung on a crane beam 27 sliding within a beam 28 which is raised by means of a chain 55 acting via wheels 56, 60, worms 62, wheels 63, on spirally threaded columns engaging the beam 28. When the beam 28 is raised, the beams 27 are drawn out of the beams 28 by means of ropes 86 wound on cylinders 89 by an electric motor 91, and the ice block 22A passes into the guide duct 34 through doors 18.
