1,035,436. Valves. UNIVERSAL EQUIPMENT CO. (LONDON) Ltd. March 29, 1965 [May 8, 1964], No. 19244/64. Heading F2V. [Also in Division B8] An apparatus for dispensing a measured quantity of gaseous liquid, such as beer, comprises a liquid measuring vessel 30 connected to inlet and outlet valves A, C and a gas expansion chamber 32 having a valve 42 for admitting liquid therein and communicating with the vessel via ports 52, 53, the arrangement being such that when the liquid has filled the vessel and has reached a level in the chamber determined by the balance of the liquid and gas pressures, the supply of liquid to the vessel and chamber is cut off and the discharge valve is opened whereupon the gas under pressure passes by way of the ports 52, 53 to effect discharge of a measured quantity of the liquid from the measuring vessel through the outlet valve C. The inlet and outlet valves A, C and the valve 42 are actuated by means of cams 24, 25, 48 mounted on a shaft 20 which is rotated via a handle 81; the inlet and outlet valves each have a resilient washer 12, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the cams act on the ends of the valves via a cup 14. The valve 42 is provided with an extension 49 slidable in a guide 51 having bores 53, 70, the bore 53 being normally closed by a spring-loaded needle valve 60, Fig. 5 (not shown). The valve 60 is opened by a diaphragm 62. In operation, with the inlet valve A and valve 42 open as shown in Fig. 1, beer under pressure is fed into the vessel 30 and rises into the expansion chamber 32 until the gas pressure therein balances the pressure of the beer. The cam-shaft is then rotated to close the inlet valve and valve 42 and open the outlet valve C. The pressurized gas in the expansion chamber 32 then flows through port 70, past the needle valve 60 and then through port 52 to thereby assist in the dispensing of the beer from the measuring chamber; a pair of identical measuring chambers and associated valves are mounted side by side so that as one chamber is filling the other is dispensing. Additional pressurized gas may be fed via a manifold located in the base 1 of the apparatus in order to accelerate the dispensing operation.
