Essentially boron free stainless steels and nickel based alloys are treated to reduce the effects of irradiation thereon by addition thereto of 5-200 part per million, by weight, of the isotope boron -11. The alloys may also contain up to 0.2% of zirconium. Various heat treatments are disclosed. The alloy may be used as a fuel can or as cladding in a nuclear reactor.
