Cross-linked polyethylene covered wire is manufactured without premature partial cross-linking, by mixing molten dicumyl peroxide and granular polyethylene at a temperature not exceeding the decomposition temperature of the peroxide, e.g. at 50 DEG C., cooling the coated particles obtained and then extruding over wire. Optional ingredients which may be present are antioxidants such as 4,41-thio-bis-(6-tBu-3Me-phenol) or polymerized trimethyl dihydroquinoline, fillers such as carbon black, pigments and softeners.
