Unsaturated primary alcohols are prepared by reacting an olefin, which shows chain branching at the double bond, with gaseous formaldehyde which may contain water in the presence of a catalyst comprising a stannic halide supported on an inert support, at a temperature between 0‹ and 200‹ C. The catalyst is preferably stannic chloride, and specified supports are alumina, silica, silica-alumina, thoria, chromia, titania, zirconia, and the olefin feed preferably contains between 4 and 20 carbon atoms. The reaction is preferably carried out in a solvent.
