A pick stem 2 of rectangular cross-section is secured in a socket 3 on the stem being forced down into the socket to a shoulder 4 as a widely flared U-shaped notch 5 is entered by the rigid outer cylindrical surface 8 of a resilient bolt 6 housed in a blind hole 7 in the socket. The axis of the bolt is parallel with the edge of the notch 5 and the bolt comprises two metal shells 8, 9 interconnected by a block 10 of rubber or the like and having a gap between the shells to allow the shells to move together sufficiently to allow the bolt to retract fully into the hole 7. The bolt can be fixed in position in the hole by a screw or the like passing through a hole drilled in the socket and extending into the shell 9, and a threaded plug (not shown) closes the open end of the blind hole 7. As shown two similar symmetrical bolts may be fitted to cooperate with a pick shank having two notches 5. In the modification shown in Fig. 5 (not illustrated) the shell 9 has a longitudinal flat cooperating with an abutment in the hole to prevent the bolt from rotating. In a further form, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) two bolts project right through the socket and the holes are closed at each end by yoke members, and with reference to Figs. 8 and 9 wedge means for removal of the picks are described.
