To improve the steadiness of running of a rail vehicle in which the brakes are controlled by a separate non-load-carrying wheel pressed, e.g. against the side of a rail, a similar balancing wheel is provided on the other side of the rail. As described with reference to an overhead mono-rail, wheels 7, 11 are held against the web 1a of the rail by spring 14. A centrifugal clutch 2 is driven by wheel 7 and at a predetermined speed drives a sloping cam 15 with its lower surface engaging the brake valve lever 16. A hole 18 is provided in the other end of the lever to receive a cable for manual operation. The device may be carried in a special speed detecting vehicle coupled to several braked vehicles.
