1,136,013. Amine oxides. CHEMISCHE WERK H LS A.G. 6 April, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 15233/66. Heading C2C. Tertiary amine oxides are made by reacting a tertiary amine with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of a compound of a metal of subgroups IV, V or VI of the Periodic Table, or mixtures thereof. Specified amines include aliphatic, aromatic and cycloaliphatic amines and alkanolamines. Preferred catalysts are compounds of vanadium, molybdenum and tungsten and may be oxides or salts of inorganic or organic acids or co-ordination complexes. Soluble catalysts are particularly effective. Specified peroxides are t-butyl and cumene hydroperoxides. Examples relate to the preparation of N-oxides of dimethylaniline, trimethylamine, N,N-dimethyllaurylamine and N-lauryldiethyanolamine.
