A dyebath and resin finishing composition comprises an aqueous solution containing a hardenable aminoplast resin precondensate, a catalyst and a dye in which the dye is a) substantially non-substantive cotton, b) is soluble to at least 4% by weight in an aqueous solution containing 5% zinc nitrate hexahydrate at 7% dimethylol dihydroxyethylene urea and c) has at least one group capable of reacting with formaldehyde when in the presence of catalytic quantities of acid to form a methylol group, the aminoplast resin precondensate contains at least two methylol groups, the catalyst is one or more of zinc nitrate, zinc fluoborate, zinc silicofluoride, zinc sulphate, zinc benzene sulphonate, zinc om or p toluenesulphonate, zinc o - m and p-phenolsulphonate, zinc thiocyanate, zinc bromide and zinc chloride, the catalyst being in a amount calculated from the formula Z = X + YαCp in which Z is the weight percentage of the catalyst to be applied to the fabric, Cp is the weight percentage of pore dye applied to the fabric, α is the dye activity coefficient and for each of the said zinc salts X and Y have the following values for the indicated hydrate:-
