1,148,504. Making ingots; improving metal characteristics. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 23 June, 1966 [29 June, 1965], No. 27568/65. Headings B3A and B3V. A process to improve the ductility of metaloxide composite materials or dispersed phase alloys comprises making an ingot or billet therefrom by spraying or projecting the composite material or an alloy, which is in powder or wire form, on to a basis body and then working the billet, e.g. by drawing or extruding. The composite material may be Al-Al 2 O 3 containing 2-20% alumina in the form of an oxidized powder or a sintered billet extruded to a diameter of 1-10 mm. Metal projection is carried out at a distance of 50-250 mm. from the basis body and perpendicularly or obliquely to the surface of the body at a temperature of at least 800‹ C. for a time of flight period of a few seconds and preferably less than one second. The prepared billet is thermally degassed at a temperature of 550-625‹ C. at a pressure of 10SP-2/SP-10SP-5/SP mm. Hg for 10-30 hours. The billets may be formed with fins and are finally extruded and drawn with intermediate annealing. The invention is also applicable to magnesium-magnesia composites, for example.
