An exercising apparatus comprises a chamber divided by a piston into two parts, said two parts containing a liquid and being connected by a passage containing a variable constriction and said piston being operable by muscular force to decrease the volume of one compartment while increasing the volume of the other, characterised in that the said passage divides into two branches in parallel each containing an adjustable constriction and a check valve arranged so that liquid flows through one of the branches in one direction while the other is closed by its associated check valve and vice versa. In an embodiment shown the device consists of a double-acting pump 1 consisting of a rotor 4 which moves on shaft 5, and divides the pump chamber into two portions 1a and 1b. These are connected via joint 10, tube 11, external constriction 13 and joint 14. When the shaft 5 is actuated by an external shaft in the direction of arrow F, fluid is forced from section la to 1b via the constriction. The constriction comprises two parallel circuits each with its own needle valve and equipped with one way valves in opposite senses so that liquid flows through one tube when the pump is turned in direction of arrow F, and through the other tube when the pump is turned in the opposite direction. The valve circuits may be integral in the block of material from which the pump is made. In another embodiment the needle valves are actuated by a screw thread, and the valves are connected to the piston shaft 5 by a friction drive so that the resistance to motion of the piston increases as the angle of rotation of the shaft increases. Movable stops may be incorporated to limit the distance of travel of the piston and counters to count the number of strokes may also be used.
