1,156,177. Viewing equipment for radioactive environment. SAINT-GOBAIN TECHNIQUES NOUVELLES and SOC. INDUSTRIELLE TRIPLEX. 8 Aug., 1966 [6 Aug., 1965], No. 35461/66. Heading B4Q. A window for a radioactive cell comprises glass slabs 10, 12, 14, 16 mounted in a casing 21, the spaces 24, 26 between the slabs 12, 14, 16 being filled with a transparent solid substance having a refractive index higher than that of air, this substance being introduced into the spaces in a liquid condition and then solidified. A suitable substance is a resin which hardens by polymerization upon the addition of a catalyst at ambient temperature. Alternatively, a substance solid at ambient temperature but having a low melting point may be used e.g., a gel formed by adding aluminium stearate to warmed paraffin oil. Further, the substance may comprise a thermosetting resin or a liquid resin hardened by irradiation. The liquid filling substance is introduced through tubes 30, 32, the tube 34 serving as an outlet for the displaced air.
