A device for separating a starter bar 1 from a cast strand 2 comprises a stirrup 3 through which the strand 2 passes and which is attached to the body of a jack 4, and a tool 6 mounted on the rod 5 of the jack 4 and movable relative to the stirrup 3 to engage the cast strand 2 and separate the starter bar 1 by laterally displacing it out of engagement from a dove-tail connection. The starter bar 1 has longitudinal grooves 17 that engage and slide relative to shoulders 18 on the stirrup until abutments at the ends of the grooves 17 engage the shoulders and pivot the stirrup 3 and jack 4 about a pivot-pin 7. A control device 15 senses the pivotal movement and operates the jack 4 to effect separation of the starter bar. The stirrup 3 and jack 4 are mounted on a carriage 8 movable by a jack 10 to engage the starter bar 1 prior to a separation and movable after a separation in the opposite direction away from the strand 2. In addition, the stirrup 3 and jack 4 are elastically supported by a piston and cylinder arrangement 13, 14. In an alternative embodiment the separating device is mounted beneath a strand severing device (19), (Fig. 4, not shown) that is pivotal about a pivot shaft (20) and elastically supported at its free end. The tool (26), (Fig. 5, not shown) is shaped to engage the grooves 17 and abutments in the starter bar 1, and is moved by jack (25). The device can be used with a continuous casting installation casting a plurality of strands.
