A gear-wheel testing machine, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises guide rods 2, 3 mounting screw operated sliders 4, 5 supporting mandrels 8, 9, and gears 10, 11 which are to be meshed and tested. A spring 44 provides the pressure to mesh the gear teeth and a dial indicator 25 indicates deviations of the gear profiles. Adjustable centres 12-15 are disposed horizontally in the sliders so that other forms of gearing may be tested e. g. worm and wheel. The deviations of the gears may be graphically recorded by a device (43, Figs. 7 and 8, not shown).
