In a mercury filled barometer tube 1, such as of the syphen or Fortin type, the end of the tube 1, when the tube 1 is to be transported, is closed by a plug 9 which is provided with an aperture 11 and is covered by a flexible sleeve 12 to allow the expansion of the mercury due to temperature changes during transport.
