In an arrangement for generating timing pulses from information in binary form presented in a series of pulses which normally include a sequence of pulses spaced apart by the bit cell period, the generation process continues even in the case where information data is lost. In the preferred embodiment (Fig. 1) binary information is recorded in a magnetic tape or drum by a NRZ method in which phase modulation is utilized. Signals from a reading head 1 are shaped by a peak detecting circuit 2 and passed to a monostable circuit 3, the output of which is utilized to trigger a further monostable circuit 13 generating timing pulses HD. The output HB of circuit 2 is also fed to a frequency servo circuit 5 producing an output voltage for controlling the frequency of a multivibrator 6, When the output pulses Hm of the multivibrator 6 are synchronized with the input pulses to circuit 5, a synchronization comparing circuit produces a signal A for opening AND gates 9 and 12 whereby triggering of the monostable 3 and the circuit 5 may continue even if information signals HB are lost, the multivibrator 6 then becoming free running.
