Apparatus for applying decorative stripes to flat ceramic ware comprises a conveyor belt 1 on which the ware is located, means 4 for lifting the ware off the belt, centering it and setting it in rotation, such means being adaptable to various sizes of article and decorating elements 6 for effecting the decorating process. The means 4 preferably consists of a threeroller guide support one roller being mounted on a pressure lever and the rollers being driven to rotate the article. The operation of the rotating means and the decorating elements may be controlled by photoelectric cell 3 and suitable pneumatic magnetic valves. Each decorating element 6 has a lower part 7 containing the colouring agent and having an outlet nozzle controlled by a needle valve 10. The needle valve is spring loaded and is controlled by magnetic coil 12. The element 6 also has a central motor 15 which drives stirring mechanism 16.
