HYDROCARBON LUBRICATING COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING MIXTURES OF AN ALKYL PHOSPHITE AND FATTY ACID ESTERS FOR IMPARTING LIMITED-SLIP PROPERTIES

An additive composition for imparting limited slip properties to lubricants comprises 10-90% by weight of an organo-phosphite having alkyl and or alkenyl groups and 90-10% of an ester of a fatty acid with a fatty alcohol; the alkyl or alkenyl groups of the acid and the alcohol and at least one of those of the phosphite each containing from 12 to 30 carbon atoms. The organo-phosphite may also have short-chain alkyl groups and the ester may comprise sperm oil. A straight chain amine having from 8 to 30 carbon atoms may also be included in the composition. The additive compositions may be used in amounts of 0À1 to 40 weight per cent in lubricating oils and greases together with extreme pressure agents, antioxidants, antifoamants, detergents and dispersants. Suitable lubricating oils have viscosities of 40-6000 S.S.U. at 100‹ F., viscosity indexes of 0 to 100, and average molecular weights of 250-800, e.g. mineral oils of S.A.E. grade 5-140 and synthetic lubricants such as aliphatic phosphates, esters and diesters, silicates, siloxanes, polyoxalkyl ethers, and polyesters. Suitable greases may be made from any of the above lubricating oils and from other synthetic oils such as polypropylene, polypropylene glycol, trimethylol propane esters, neopentyl and pentaerythritol esters, di-(ethylhexyl) sebacate, di-(2-ethyl hexyl) adipate, dibutylphthalate, fluorocarbons, silicate esters, silanes, esters of phosphorus-containing acids, liquid ureas, ferrocene derivatives, hydrogenated mineral oils, chain-type polyphenyls, siloxanes and silicones, alkyl-substituted diphenyl ethers and phenoxy phenyl ethers. Thickening or gelling agents used in the greases include metal salts or soaps, surface modified clays and silicas, aryl ureas and calcium complexes.
