Sludge removing or spreading apparatus comprises a bucket wheel elevator 1 which loads a hopper 4 both of which are mounted on guides 5 for movement from a lowered collecting position to a raised position where a flap 11 automatically opens to empty the hopper 4 into a vehicle 7. A scraper blade 2 is attached to the lower part of the bucket wheel 1 and it scrapes the drying bed 12 to feed the sludge to the elevator as the apparatus is traversed across the bed 12 on a drive structure 8, Fig. 3, or along the bed on its walls 9 when the apparatus has been turned through 90 degrees. The apparatus is supported for 360-degree movement in a horizontal plane. Other embodiments are described and in one example, Fig. 11, a distributing device for sludge or filter material is mounted by brackets 19 on the wheel 1 and can be lowered in guide members 24 for spreading action when the scraper blade 2 has been raised out of contact with the bed.
