[Also in Division H1] An electromagnetic drive mechanism for a punched tape reader or a coded drum data transmitter comprises a driving lever 22 rotatable about a fixed spindle 17, levers 19 each having one arm 19a connected to a tape sensing pin 4 and the other arm 19b controlling the position of a contact spring 14 and a pawl 3 adapted to drive a toothed wheel 6 to advance the tape 9. When the electromagnet 1 is energized, a pin 23 on an extension 27a of an armature 27 rotates the lever 22 in an anti-clockwise direction about the spindle 17, this rotation being transmitted to a plate 30 by a tube 16 and a rod 21. The pawl 3 biased by springs 5, 29 therefore rotates the wheel 6, peripheral teeth on which engage central holes in the tape to advance the tape. Simultaneously the rod 21 rotates the levers 19 in an anti-clockwise direction against springs 13 so that the sensing pins are withdrawn from the tape and contact springs 14 are moved away from a contact rail 15. On release of the armature, the reverse rotation of the arms 19 causes the sensing pins, guided by their abutment with the edge of a plate 8, to return into engagement with the tape, those pins which enter holes in the tape enabling contact to be made between the respective contacts 14, 15. A pawl 11 prevents overshoot of the wheel 6 and a pawl 2 prevents reverse rotation of the wheel. In a modification the mechanism is used in a cooled drum data transmitter, the sensing pins co-operating with coded projections on the drum.
