Prepn. of storage-stable hardenable compsn. - by trimerising organic poly:isocyanate with initiator and co-initiator, giving low free isocyanate content

A storage-stable, hardenable compsn. with low volatile isocyanate content, is prepd. by (a) trimerising, to at least 80 (90-99)% conversion, an organic polyisocyanate, using (I) an anionic initiator and (II) a co-initiator of formula (II) where A is a divalent residue, and (b) breaking off trimerisation by addn. of (III) a stopper in amt. at least equimolar to the amt. of initiator. In a further claimed process, trimerisation is in absence of a co-initiator, and (III) is a complex of a B trihalide (pref. BF3) and a Lewis base. Trimerisation is more rapid. Used in lacquers or foams, by reaction with, e.g. OH cpds.
