A rotary printing machine for the printing of whole page, sectional, or line texts from a printing master on to copy sheets and marking on the copy sheets additional data in non- printed type form from data contained on a data carrier on which the data corresponding to lines of the printing master are arranged in groups adjacent to each other and in serial order one after the other comprises a printing cylinder mounting the master, means for controlling the cylinder so as to print the texts therefrom line by line, scanning means for scanning the data on the carrier in correspondence with the lines to be or having been printed by the master, and control means rendering the scanning means operative in respect of selectable ones of said groups, wherein the output of the scanning means is coupled to a marking device for marking the copy sheets with data in correspondence with the data scanned by the scanning means. The scanning means comprise a first scanning device for scanning the data on the carrier corresponding to the lines of the master and a second scanning device for scanning data on the carrier corresponding to recurrent heading data to be printed on a plurality of copy sheets, said first and second scanning devices transferring the heading data and the line data respectively to the marking device. The data carrier may be a punched card and the marking device an apparatus for perforating the printed copy sheet. As shown in Fig. 3, an hectographic master 2 is imaged on a device 18 simultaneously with the production of a corresponding punched record carrier 7 by a punching device 20. If desired, the device 20 may be replaced by an apparatus which effects recording on the carrier 7 for optical or magnetic reading. The control mechanism for a reading device 21, 24 for reading off the data carrier can be operated by mechanical, electric or electromagnetic methods. A printing cylinder 10 bearing the master 2 and the reading cylinder 21 with data carriers 6 and 22 secured thereon rotate in synchronism controlled by an intermediate drive 23. As shown, the reading off operation is carried out by a brush set 24 whose individual brushes sense individual perforations during one revolution of the cylinder 10. Alternatively, the respective section or sections of the data carrier can be read progressively during further revolutions of the cylinder 10. The values read off from the data carriers 6 and 22 by the brush set 24 are delivered through the cable 25 to the perforator 26 which, upon entry of the card 27, which takes place after the printing of the card 27, punches these values in the card.
