Metering pulses are detected by a scanning arrangement in which each line on which metering pulses occur is examined periodically by a pair of pulses a and b, a single pulse present result being produced for one, or for all of the three possible a and b scanning result combinations other than 0, 0; a pulse being recorded as present only after comparison of the current pulse present result with the presence or absence of such a result in the preceding scan. In the one arrangement all scanning results 01, 10, 11, for the a and b pairs are regarded as 1 and cause a pulse to be counted so long as the preceding result was not such as to be regarded as 1. In the other arrangement only the result 11 is regarded as 1. The scanning results from three consecutive scans may be employed in judging the presence of a pulse.
