In a warp machine for knitting lace the warps Fa to be knit into chains are controlled by guides 4a having a large aperture 7a to reduce wear on the yarns. Embroidery and gimp threads fa are guided by bars 1a, and pushed towards the needles by the leading edge 5a of the warp guides. The guides are recessed at 9a to facilitate lapping. The loop size of the lace may be varied selectively by means of bars which deflect the embroidery and gimp threads, to produce different sizes of openings in a ground structure.
