Oxygen is blown through the molten metal until a steel is obtained containing 0.25% minimum of Mn and 0.07 to 0.12% C. The steel is then cast into moulds, the O2-content being maintained at 0.02 to 0.035%. If the carbon content is less than 0.08%, the oxygen is removed by refining. The O2-content of the atmosphere above the ingot moulds is pref. regulated by the quantity of lubricant applied to the mould walls, alternatively an argon atmosphere is maintained. The purpose is to produce slabs or blooms of consistent and homogeneous quality for manufacture of cold rolled sheet for automobile chassis or triplate.
