In a method of making a point for a ball point pen, a cylindrical blank is cut off from a length of rod or wire and is backwardly extruded when cold into a hollow cylinder ISP11/SP, which is closed at one end. The cylinder is subjected to a series of deep drawing operations wherein it is lengthened and reduced in diameter, but without alteration of its wall thickness. The bottom of the cylinder is punched out and the tube has a portion of its length formed with a reduced diameter. Finally the ends of the stepped tube are tapered to form the required point.
