The hitherto unprepared compound hexamethyl - bicyclo - [2,2,0] - hexadiene - 2,5 is prepared by trimerizing butyne-2 at 0-50‹ C. in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride and an inert solvent. Hexamethyl benzene is also produced in varying quantities as a rearrangement product of the above compound.
