A method for the production of new fiber-forming ternary and tetra polymers of acrylonitrile

A fibre-forming polymer comprises at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile, 1 to 15% by weight of vinyl bromide, and from 3 to 19% by weight of a neutral non-halogen-containing monomer such as vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, or styrene. Additionally, the polymer may contain 0.25 to 1% of an ethylenically unsaturated aromatic sulphonic acid or its alkali metal salt such as sodium p-methallyloxy-benzene sulphonate. The polymers are made by bulk, solution, or preferably, aqueous dispersion methods. The polymers may be mixed with a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate and may contain stabilizers such as dibutyl tin oxide and fire retardants such as antimony oxide.
