In a catalytic process for sweetening petroleum hydrocarbon feed stocks, a petroleum hydrocarbon feed stock is contacted at a temperature within the range of 60‹ to 200‹ F. with a crystalline aluminosilicate molecular sieve having a pore diameter above 5 Angstroms which has been base-exchanged with a catalytically active copper, silver, iron, nickel, cobalt, zinc, manganese or cadmium cation or mixtures thereof, and from 50 to 95% by weight of the sodium cation originally present in the said crystalline aluminosilicate molecular sieve is base-exchanged. Calcium or magnesium ions may also be included.
