Colloidal or gelatinous suspended solids are separated from liquids, e.g. sewage effluent, by passing the liquid upwards through a plurality of passages formed by closely-spaced plates or tubes, the surfaces of which are provided with ribs, undulations, or indentations for producing eddy currents in the rising liquid. The separator shown in Fig. 8 contains corrugated plates 30 of the type shown in Fig. 7 which depicts two plates 19, 20, the peaks of plate 19 running upwards to the left, and the peaks of plate 20 running upwards to the right. The surfaces of each plate are covered with ribs 21. When the plate-unit is positioned in the separator, the side 22 is vertical. The liquid enters the separator at weir 24, rises through the perforated sheet 29 and the passages formed by the ribbed-plates; 'and flows across decanting-tray 31 to exit-weir 25.
