Water treatment of crude silica sand is followed by electrostatic and/or magnetic treatment. Washing of the crude sand, between 0.3 and 0.1 mm phi is carried out between 40 and 120 degrees C, at normal or increased pressure, with a solution of pH 7.0 to 11.0. besides wetting agents, the solution contains compounds forming complex salts with impurity cations, such as Fe, ca, Mg, Mn and/or Al. The preferred particle size may be obtained by screening and hydrocycloning in regulated sequence.
