1,234,171. Zirconia fibres. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 7 Jan., 1969 [24 Jan., 1968], No. 1011/69. Headings C1A and C1J. [Also in Division F2] A tetragonal zirconia fibre or textile contains an oxide of a metal of Group IIIB of the Periodic Table shown in Webster's Third International Dictionary, 1961, in an amount sufficient to maintain at least 80% of the zirconia in the tetragonal form when heated at 800‹ C. for one hour. Preferred additive amounts are (a) from 0À9 to 8% yttria, (b) 5 to 20% ceria, or (c) 5 to 20% mixed rare earth oxides, the percentages in each case being based on zirconia and additive combined. Actinide metal oxides including urania are also mentioned. The fibres are produced by the " relic process ", i.e. an organic polymeric fibre or textile is impregnated with a mixture of a zirconium compound and a Group IIIB metal compound, which are introduced in solution, the solvent preferably being water. The fibre or textile is then heated, at least partly in an oxidizing atmosphere, to carbonize and volatilize the polymer, and to convert the metal compounds to their oxides.
