A process for pre-treating used lubricating oils prior to re-refining comprises the steps of subjecting the used oil to a heat treatment of 15 to 110 minutes at temperatures ranging from 260‹ C. to 360‹ C., and removing the solid impurities by known methods. The said removal may be by centrifugation or by filtering; in the latter case a filter aid such as bentonite, fuller's earth or bleaching earth may be added before the heat treatment.
