1,224,857. Copolyamide. KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 11 Dec., 1969 [17 Dec., 1968], No. 60589/69. Heading C3R. A heat-resistant transparent copolyamide (P) made by polycondensing: (A) #-caprolactam and/or #-aminocaproic acid with (B) 4-aminomethylcyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid and (C) p-aminomethylbenzoic acid. There may be 5-50 moles (B)+(C) per 100 moles (A). The total (B) + (C) may comprise, by moles, 99-1% (B) and 1-99% (C). The reaction may be performed at 180-350‹ C.; it may be performed at first under pressure, then at normal pressure, and, if necessary, further at reduced pressure. The atmosphere may be N 2 . The reaction may take place in the presence of H 2 O and an organic or inorganic acid (D) or base (E), which can act as catalyst and structure-adjusting agents. (D) may be benzoic, acetic, adipic, phosphoric or hydrochloric acid, (E) may be an amine or ammonia. There may be 5-100% wt. H 2 O based on total wt. of monomers. The proportion of cisto trans-structures in (P) can be controlled by use of the structure-adjusting agent, and suitably selecting the polymerization conditions ; hence the cis-: transratio in (B) is not important. (P) may be melt-spun to give fibres, or melt-press-moulded to form sheets; or a solution of (P) in HCOOH may be cast to give a film.
