A paraffinic raffinate mix 40 and a highly aromatic carbon black feed 42 are produced by contacting at 36 a deasphalted oil 26 with a highly aromatic.solvent extract phase 34. The oil is produced from a crude petroleum fraction 16 by conventional vacuum flash distillation at 18 and conventional solvent deasphalting of the residuum at 22, and the stream 34 is produced from a cycle o;l and/or decant oil 28 by extraction with furfural, phenol, liquid sulphur dioxide or glycol ether at 30. Decant oil is a fraction recovered from catalytic cracking and is higher boiling than recycle oil, e.g. having a B.R. of 700‹ to 900‹ F.
