A variable angle lay-barge comprises a buoyant hull 10 having a slotted opening extending therethrough preferably from the stern of the hull at least half way to the bow, and a tiltable cradle 14 which is pivoted to the hull near the centre of gravity of the barge, at 18, and which extends through the slotted opening, and means, e.g. jacks 20, for positioning the cradle 14 at a predetermined angle for laying underwater flow-lines. The jacks 20 are mounted, one at each side of the cradle, upon which is mounted a stationary clamp 26 for securing the previously laid portion 27 of a flow-line, or riser, a rotatable clamp 28 for orientation the next section 30 of the line to be laid, and a travelling chuck 32 for holding the section 30 while it is fastened to the portion 27. A crane 22 is adapted to hoist pipe sections 24 upon the cradle 14. The hull 10 has a structural tie 12. Shock absorbers may be interposed between the jacks 20 and the hull 10.
