1,192,137. Oligomers and resins from -- dihydrocarbyl - # - propiolactone. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 5 Aug., 1968, No. 37168/68. Headings C3B and C3R. Oligomers having at least one structural unit of formula where n is 0 to 20 and the terminal carbonyloxy group is part of a neutralized or non-neutralized carboxyl group prepared by reacting an ,- dihydrocarbyl-#-proprolactone with an organic compound having at least one non-phenolic carbon bound OH group at 50-175‹ C. in the absence of an alkaline catalyst. The oligomer may be neutralized with an amine and it may be prepared using no catalyst. Specified OH containing compounds are mono- or polyalcohols with up to 20 C atoms, alkyds, epoxy resins, hydrolysed epoxides (lists are given). The oligomers may be converted to resins by reaction at 175-260‹ C. with a resin forming compound (i.e. one having either at least one carboxyl group, at least two potential carboxyl groups, or at least two hydroxyl or potential hydroxyl groups) of which lists are given. The oligomer or the resin may be mixed with a phenol-aldehyde or amino-aldehyde resin. The examples disclose reacting pivalolactone with (1) a polyester from phthalic anhydride, 2,2- bis - (hydroxymethyl) - 1,3 - propanediol, di- 1,2-propylene glycol and glycidyl esters of alkanoic acids, (2) a hydrolysed epoxy resin, (3), (4) and (5) trimethylol propane possibly followed either by additional trimethylol propane and neopentyl glycol or by additional trimethylol propane and additional pivalolactone. The products are diluted with 2-butoxyethanol and mixed with aqueous triethylamine or 2-dimethylaminoethanol to give products useful for making paints or lacquers.
