A process for the improvement of the soil structure of heavy arable soils and virgin soils rich in clay comprises adding to the soil an acidreacting substance and a salt which decomposes therewith to form carbon dioxide, and optionally subsequently cultivating the soil to increase the intensity of action of the liberated gas on the soil particles. The salt preferably is calcium carbonate or dolomite, and the acid-reacting substance may be calcium acid phosphate, phosphoric acid or an acid-adjusted silicic acid sol and/or acid-adjusted silicate suspension (the acid suitably being phosphoric acid). Optional ingredients for addition to the soil are silicic acid sols and alkali metal silicates.
