A spinneret plate for use in melt-spinning filaments of non-circular cross-section is provided with a number of extrusion orifices each having a cross-section in the form of a straight central portion, each end of which is joined to a further straight portion in the central region of the latter, the further straight portions being disposed perpendicularly to the straight central portion. The cross-section of each extrusion orifice may be in the form of an H. The width of either the central portion or the further portions may be 0À06 to 0À3 mm. The crosssectional area of each orifice may be 0À1 to 5 sq. mm. The length of the central portion or either of the further portions may be 0À2 to 1 mm. The filaments formed by melt-spinning using a spinneret according to the invention may have the cross-sectional shapes shown in Fig. 2. The filament may be formed of a polyamide or a polyolefin. The polymer used in the examples is polyethylene terephthalate.
