A chucking device for use in machining thinwalled components comprises an annular member 20 securable to the flange 16 of a hollow lathe spindle 14, jaw members on chuck elements 32 located within the member 20 are radially outwardly displaceable by a cone member 48 attached to the lathe draw-bar 50. A guide plate 30 located within the member 20 is provided with radial slots 42 in which respective pins 44 of each chuck element 32 engage to permit guided radial movement of the elements 32 and jaws 46 when the draw-bar is actuated. The annular member 20 forms a shroud around the jaw members and is of a predetermined internal diameter so that a thin-walled component 64 is gripped between the outwardly displaceable jaws and the internal periphery of the member 20 when the cone member 48 is actuated. Annular springs 60, 62 around the chuck elements 32 retract the jaws 46 when the cone member moves to its release position.
