1,185,929. Rail vehicle timing gear; rail systems. HERBERT MORRIS Ltd. 14 Oct., 1968 [19 Oct., 1967], No. 47622/67. Headings B7H and B7L. [Also in Divisions F2 and H2] A carriage, bogey or trolley of an overhead travelling crane is driven by a moving member of a linear, or rotary induction motor mounted to rotate a shaft a or shafts aSP3/SP fixed to a wheel ASP1/SP or wheels ASP2/SP on which the carriage runs, the stationary member of the motor being mounted on the carriage and an electromechanical brake c, cSP1/SP being mounted on the carriage and adapted to operate on the moving member. As shown the moving member comprises either a disc bSP1/SP driving the shaft a or a belt DSP1/SP engaging a pair of drums dSP1/SP which are mounted on the shafts aSP3/SP and the brakes c, cSP1/SP are energized to release disc gripping pads simultaneously with the energizing of the respective coils b, B of the stationary members to move the carriage A on the fixed rails 1 or the trolley ASP2/SP on the beams 2 of the carriage A. One or two coils b may be provided for each disc bSP1/SP, which may be connected to a respective running wheel through a variable-speed gear-box. The two wheels on each side of the carriage may be driven through a belt (Fig. 3, not shown) which is formed of rubber with metal plates or wire embedded in it or through a chain with metal plates fixed thereto.
