1,189,732. Continuous casting. BOHLER & CO. A.G. GEB. 4 Dec., 1967 [6 Dec., 1966], No. 55036/67. Heading B3F. Rolls 5 which shape and reduce the crosssection of a cast strand 4, e.g. of carbon or alloy steel, are disposed at a location where the molten core thickness would be 5-30 mm., without the rolls, to reduce the core length so that the core tip closely precedes the plane in which the strand assumes its rolled shape, the casting conditions being adjusted, according to the cross-sectional areas and velocities of the strand (determined by sensing units 1, 2) upstream and downstream of the rolls 5, to obtain at the location a desired theoretical proportion of core in the strand cross-section, which proportion would exist if the rolls were absent. The core size is adjusted by altering the strand withdrawal or cooling rate. There may be extra shaping rolls 6-8.
