A tester for engine ignition circuitry or components or parts thereof incorporates a contact breaker system 9, driven by a motor 7 operating from a relatively low voltage supply e.g. the vehicle battery (which is connected at 1, 2), which enables the primary winding of a transformer 10 to be intermittently energized from the supply to provide a relatively high voltage signal (of the order of 200v) on the transformer secondary. This signal is applied to a continuity testing circuit in which it is rectified at 18 and to which a circuit or component to be tested is connected via a jack plug 21. Continuity is indicated by illumination of the neon 14. The tester has facilities for carrying out tests other than the high voltage continuity test. Low voltage continuity may be tested by connecting a single lead to the jack plug 5. When this lead is connected to an earth in the ignition circuit, lamp 3 brightens, and when it is connected to conductors at the supply voltage, lamp 4 brightens. Ignition coils may be tested by connecting them across a jack plug inserted at 11, with a spark plug connected at 23 via a spark gap 22. When the motor 7 is operated the coil in intermittently energized and a spark should appear across the gap 22. The whole ignition circuit is tested by simply connecting a plug lead to 23, whereon operation of the spark gap shows that it is in order. The tester may be adapted to an alternative input supply by shorting out the resisters 8, 12 using the switch 13.
