In a refuse burning furnace through which refuse is fed on a grate, the combustion chamber has gas tight water tube panels lining the roof and walls of the combustion chamber. The roof lining panel 54 slopes upwardly from the feed end of the grate and air inlets 42 in the roof are arranged to form a ball of flame 43 above the grate. The burning gases pass up a tube lined shaft 28 to a heat recovery section 14. A burner 48 in the rear wall of the furnace is of sufficient size to operate the steam generator if no refuse is available. The ashes pass to a pit 20. The wall panels are protected by cast iron plates 32 at the sides of the grate, and are formed by welding finned tubes together.
