Sulfur-Containing Cycloaliphatic Reaction Products and their use in Lubricant Compositions

[Also in Division C5] Oil-soluble sulphur-containing cycloaliphatic compounds are prepared by heating sulphur and at least one unsaturated cycloaliphatic compound of formula in a molar ratio of sulphur tocycloaliphatic compound of from 0.5 : 1 to 10 : 1, where in the above formula n and nSP1/SP are each integers of 0-9 with the proviso that 5 # n + nSP1/SP# 10 and at least one pair of Rs (one R from each of two adjacent nuclear carbon atoms) together form an additional carbon-carbon linkage so that there is at least one unsaturated linkage in the cycloaliphatic nucleus; and the remaining groups R are hydrogen; a hydrocarbon group; a heterocyclic radical; the radical in which n is 0 or 1 and mSP1/SP is 0 or a whole number up to 20, and the Ws are oxygen, sulphur, or =N-R 4 , R 1 and R 2 are divalent C 1 -C 3 O hydrocarbon groups, R 3 and R 4 are each hydrogen, a C 1- C 30 hydrocarbon group, acyl or -NR 5 R 6 in which R 5 and R 6 are hydrogen, a C 1 -C 30 hydrocarbon group or acyl or R 5 and R 6 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic radical which may contain additional hetero atoms; the group in which WSP1/SP is as defined for W above; the groups or in which R 7 is hydrogen, halo, a C 1 -C 30 hydrocarbon group or the group as defined above, acyl; cyano; nitro; or halogen. In addition one or more pairs of Rs from each of two non-adjacent nuclear carbons can represent a carbon to carbon linkage, a divalent radical, e.g. alkylene or oxy or a pair of Rs on the same carbon atom can represent a divalent aliphatic group (e.g. alkylene) both valences of the group not arising from the same atom in the group. The hydrocarbon groups referred to above may also carry substituents. The acyl groups referred to may be derived from organic acids by removal of an OH or SH group, e.g. from organic phosphorus acids, organic thiophosphorus acids, organic sulphur acids, carboxylic acids and thiocarboxylic acids. A preferred group of starting materials are those obtained by the reaction of a conjugated diene with an ethylenically or acetylenically unsaturated compound by the Diels-Alder reaction. The reaction of the unsaturated cycloaliphatic compound with sulphur results in a mixture of products in which divalent sulphur atom(s) link the cycloaliphatic nuclei together and in which the sulphur atoms may form part of a ring. Numerous examples are given of the preparation of various Diels-Alder condensation products and the sulphurization of these.
