1,196,835. Lysostaphin. MEAD JOHNSON & CO., 14 May, 1968, No. 22956/68. Heading C2A. Lysostaphin, an antibiotic able to lyse organisms of the genus staphylococcus, is produced in enhanced yield by cultivating Staphylococcus staphylolyticus NRRL B-2628 in an aqueous nutrient medium comprising at least 4% by weight of enzymatically hydrolyzed casein as nitrogen-supplying nutrient and at least 0.5% by weight of glycerol, mannose or galactose as carbon-supplying nutrient at pH 6.5 to 8.5. One only of the specified sources of C or N may be present, but it is preferred that both be present in the aqueous nutrient medium, which also contains inorganic salts and soy peptone. The hydrolyzed casein is used in 4-10% amounts and the glycerol, mannose or galactose in quantities of 0.5 to 5% by weight of the medium. Specification 998,539 is referred to.
