1,199,219. Feeding fibres, carding machine, lap forming machine. A. MARINONI. 1 Nov., 1968 [6 Nov., 1967; 7 Oct., 1968], No. 51916/ 68. Headings D1F and D1N. Fibres are carded, twisted into a sliver, and selectively distributed into sliver cans in an apparatus comprising a device for loading controlled amounts of fibre onto a conveyor belt, a plurality of channels each having one end adjacent an end of the belt and the other end adjacent a pair of rollers, a means for causing an air draught at the rollers, means 2 connecting each pair of rollers to a supply 10 of a multi-feed carding machine, a device 3 for continuously twisting the web from the carding machine into a sliver and for selectively distributing it onto one of a plurality of horizontal sliver cans 4 Fibre feed to carding machine: A balance loading apparatus (103) unloads metered amounts of fibre onto one end of first endless conveyor belt (95) the other end of this first conveyor belt is mounted above one end of a second endless conveyor belt (96). The other end of this second conveyor (96) is mounted above a roller (94). The two conveyor belts (95) and (96) and the roller (94) are mounted above four further conveyor belts which feed the multiple feeds of the carding machine. By altering the direction of rotation of the endless conveyor belts (94) and (96) and roller (94), the fibres are fed along and around the ends of the conveyors into any selected one of the four further conveyors. See Figs. 8-12 not shown. The four separate supplies of fibre are fed to four channels 8 through which air draughts flow, the fibres passing to four pairs of perforated rollers (9) mounted on shafts 10 at the other end of the channels 8, (see Fig. 1), the pair of rollers (9) each deliver a fibre web to the carding machine. The air draught through the channels 8 is created by an aspirator sucking air through the perforated ends of the rollers from the inside thereof the perforated middle portion of the rollers is in front of the channels 8 and therefore air is sucked from the channels into the middle part of the rollers. Twisting sliver from carding machine. The sliver is fed by a pair of rollers 22 mounted on a rotatable plate 20. The plate 20 is driven by a gear ring 21 fixed thereon from a belt or the carding machine, the rollers 22 are driven by gear 23 acting on a non-rotating fixed gear ring 25. The rotating rollers 22 move in a circle about the axis of ring 22 during twisting of the sliver. In an alternative embodiment, see Fig. 7 not shown, the feed rollers (65) are mounted off-centre in a rotatable annular gear ring (61). The rollers are driven by another rotatable annular gear ring (62) mounted in bearings in the gear ring (61). The gear ring (61) is itself mounted off-centre in a further annular gear ring (60). The three annular rings are driven by toothed belts from a common shaft and drive and rotate the axis off the feed rollers to twist the sliver. Coilers The twisted sliver from twisting feed rollers 22 is fed into tube 19 which, at its end adjacent the rollers 22, is mounted so as to oscillate and cause the twisted sliver to completely fill the tube, the diameter of the tube 19 is larger than the diameter of the circle traced out by the twisting rollers 22. In the alternative embodiment of the sliver twister (see above), the rotation of the three annular gear rings causes the sliver to be coiled, as well as being twisted, into an adjacent sliver can. Selective distribution of the sliver into the sliver cans. As shown in Fig. 6 the end of the tube 19 receiving the coiled and twisted sliver is mounted on a plate 45 which is rotated so the tube 19 is in front of one of the sliver cans 42. Plate 45 is rotated by disc 50 acting on pegs 53 mounted on plate 45. Disc 80 is driven by motor 47 for one revolution after a desired amount of sliver has entered the can. Plate 45 is rotated quickly enough to break the sliver between the cans. In the alternative embodiment the mount for the three coiling and twisting gear rings is moved angularly between the sliver cans by a disc similar to disc 50.
