1,203,716. Treating fractured bones. A. SAMPSON. 5 June, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 26845/68. Heading A5R. Apparatus for repositioning the parts A, B of a fractured bone comprises a clamp member having two relatively movable jaws 14, 23 able to be locked together in a selected position of adjustment, and a tool 12 used to adjust the jaws and having two relatively movable frame parts 31, 32 able to be connected to the movable jaws and means 41 for moving one of the frame parts relative to the other so as to adjust the jaws. As shown, the jaw parts are provided with interfitting serrations 24 and are locked together around the bone by a bolt 28 which is secured to one jaw and threadingly engages with a nut 21 slidably mounted on the other. Projections (16, 26) on the inside surfaces of the jaws aid the clamp member in gripping the bone. The tool (shown as removed from the clamp member after the bone parts have been clamped together) includes a screw threaded rod 41 which, when moved by manually turning a knob (43), moves the two frame parts of the tool relative to each other. The frame parts are able to be secured one to each of the jaw parts by projections 58 which interlock with apertures 19, 20 on the jaw parts. The projections are supported on spring members 50, 56 able to be moved for engagement with the apertures by turning bolts 55, 61. The clamp member and tool may be of a stainless steel material and it is stated that the clamp member when applied about the bone fracture may be left implanted within the body permanently or, if desired, may be removed at a later date by surgery.
