In a tractor/trailer braking system having mechanical control for the tractor and hydraulic control for the trailer brakes, the application of the tractor brakes is caused to lag that of the trailer brakes. As shown, a brake pedal 1 and the tractor brake control rod 7 are both fulcrumed on a movable lever 3 which in turn is fulcrumed on a stationary pivot 4. When the pedal 1 is depressed it firstly pivots on a pin 2 and the pedal heel 9 engages a push member 10 of an hydraulic valve 11 to close an exhaust outlet 13 leading to a reservoir. This causes hydraulic pressure communicated via an inlet 12 from an hydraulic distributer on the tractor to increase in the valve 11 and apply the trailer brakes via an outlet 14. Continued effort on the pedal as it bears against the depressed push member 10 causes pin 2 to move to the right rotating lever 3 about pivot 4 thereby pulling rod 7 to apply the tractor brakes.
