A slurry explosive composition contains, by weight, 40-75% ammonium nitrate, 6-20% water, 5-55% TNT, 0.1-5% of a thickening agent, and more than 0-1% of at least one of the following surface active additives: a salt of an alkylamine having 14 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g. octadecylamine acetate, an alkyl trimethylammonium chloride, e.g. octadecyl- or lauryltrimethylammonium chloride, an imidazoline derived from aminoethyl ethanolamine and a fatty acid, e.g. stearic acid, and a sodium salt of an alcohol sulphate having 8 to 18 carbon atoms. The thickening agent may be carboxymethylcellulose, locust bean gum and/or guar gum. The additive increases the stability and velocity of detonation of the slurry.
